HYPERGRAMMAR - English GRAMMAR to improve WRITING

Welcome to HyperGrammar electronic grammar course at the University of Ottawa's Writing Centre. This course covers approximately the same ground as our English department's ENG 1320 Grammar course. The content ofHyperGrammar is the result of the collaborative work of the four instructors who were teaching the course in Fall 1993: Heather MacFadyen, David Megginson, Frances Peck, and Dorothy Turner. David Megginson was then responsible for editing the grammar and exercises and for converting them to SGML.

This package is designed to allow users a great deal of freedom and creativity as they read about grammar.HyperGrammar allows users to create and follow their own lines of thought. On its first appearance on any page, every grammatical term is linked to its definition. A user reading about nouns might jump to the simple subject, and from there to subordinate clauses -- users are not required or even encouraged to use this material in order.

This package is currently under construction! You are welcome to use HyperGrammar over the Internet, but please be aware that it is incomplete and almost certainly contains some errors.

ENGLISH VERB TENSES FREE

Do you know about the verb tenses? What's the difference between the present perfect and the past simple? Are you sure? How about the past perfect?

Many students have problems with verb tenses. But they aren't really very difficult, I promise. Here you'll find really clear examples and explanations, so you can easily review all the English tenses - firstly how to make them (the 'form'), secondly, how to use them (the 'use').

5. I always make a point of...
6. Whenever I get the chance, I...
7. I have a habit of..
8. I can't (seem to) stop...

How To Use These Phrases In Your English
Phrases 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 10 are followed by a gerund. (-ing form)
Phrase 2 is followed by the infinitive of the main verb (e.g. I often tend to watch TV in the evenings.)
Phrase 4 needs a noun or gerund in the blank space.
Phrases 1 - 3 are quite neutral. The habit is neither a good one or bad one.
Phrase 4 is a bit more positive and phrases 5 and 6 show that the speaker likes doing these things and tries to do them a lot.
Phrase 7 suggests that the speaker often does something but that it's not intentional. It may be a bad habit.
Phrases 8 to 10 are habits that the speaker thinks are bad but cannot stop.

Elliott Murphy - The Day After Valentine's Day

There were paper roses all down the street
I crushed 'em under my feet as I walked on
To another life that maybe I wouldn't face alone
But now I'm on my own - so far gone
Its the day after Valentine's Day
There's nothing led that's gonna help me ease the pain
All my cards are gone but my broken head remains
Everything changed the day after Valentine's Day
She said if I stod kissing you I may never stop
But what we got didn't mean that much
Except this memory that keeps daunting me
And takes me back in time
Before you led me behind
When love was mine
But its the day after Valentine's Day
There's nothings left that's gonna help me ease the pain
All my cards are gone but my broken dead remains
Everything changed the day after Valentine's Day
But its the day after Valentine's Day
And nothings gonna help me now to ease the pain
All my cards are gone but my broken head remains
Everything changed the day after Valentine's Day
But its the day after Valentine's Day
Oh and there's nothings left to help me now and gonna ease the pain
Well all my cards they're gone but my broken head remains
Cause everything changed the day after Valentine's Day
Yeah everything changed the day after Valentine's Day
Everything changed the day after Valentine's Day
